Brexit Party Falls Short in Its First Parliamentary Election Challenge

LONDON—The U.K.’s opposition Labour Party fended off the upstart euroskeptic Brexit Party during a by-election touted as a litmus test for a protest movement that threatens to reshape British politics.

The Brexit Party, founded two months ago to protest the U.K.’s delayed exit from the European Union, gained 29% of the vote to select a new lawmaker in the English city of Peterborough on Thursday. The Labour Party claimed victory with 31% of the vote.
